35 million-year-old solid-wood-borer beetle larvae support the idea of stressed Eocene amber forests

چکیده
Abstract Eocene amber is an important window into the past about 35 million years ago. The large quantities of resin produced by this forest past, resulting in amber, triggered idea a under stress. Recent findings higher abundances hoverfly larvae modern fauna often associated with wood-borer larvae, provided hint that may have contributed to Yet, so far only few such been reported. We compiled dozen additional including giant one at least mm length Rovno amber. Heavily damaged fossils furthermore indicate larger type were prone oxidation and that, some, enigmatic tube-like tunnels pieces represent remains larvae. This find strongly indicates not rare, but common forest, which compatible high further supports Whether possible cause stress or symptom already stressed unclear.

luxS in bacteria isolated from 25- to 40-million-year-old amber.
Interspecies bacterial communication is mediated by autoinducer-2, whose synthesis depends on luxS. Due to the apparent universality of luxS (present in more than 40 bacterial species), it may have an ancient origin; however, no direct evidence is currently available. We amplified luxS in bacteria isolated from 25- to 40-million-year-old amber. The phylogenies and molecular clocks of luxS and t...
متن کاملTwo-level systems and boson peak remain stable in 110-million-year-old amber glass.
The two most prominent and ubiquitous features of glasses at low temperatures, namely the presence of tunneling two-level systems and the so-called boson peak in the reduced vibrational density of states, are shown to persist essentially unchanged in highly stabilized glasses, contrary to what was usually envisaged. Specifically, we have measured the specific heat of 110 million-year-old amber ...
متن کاملDraft Genome Sequence of Staphylococcus succinus subsp. succinus Type Strain DSM 14617, Isolated from Plant and Soil Inclusions within 25- to 35-Million-Year-Old Dominican Amber
Staphylococcus succinus subsp. succinus type strain DSM 14617 was isolated from plant and soil inclusions within 25- to 35-million-year-old Dominican amber. The complete genome sequence of strain DSM 14617T includes a genome of 2.88 Mb (32.94% G+C content) without any plasmids.
متن کاملA new glimpse on Mesozoic zooplankton—150 million-year-old lobster larvae
Larvae of malacostracan crustaceans represent a large fraction of modern day zooplankton. Plankton is not only a major part of the modern marine ecosystem, but must have played an important role in the ecosystems of the past as well. Unfortunately, our knowledge about plankton composition of the past is still quite limited. As an important part of today's zooplankton, malacostracan larvae are s...
متن کاملA Thirty Million Year-Old Inherited Heteroplasmy
Due to essentially maternal inheritance and a bottleneck effect during early oogenesis, newly arising mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutations segregate rapidly in metazoan female germlines. Consequently, heteroplasmy (i.e. the mixture of mtDNA genotypes within an organism) is generally resolved to homoplasmy within a few generations. Here, we report an exceptional transpecific heteroplasmy (predict...
